Alchemy
Alchemy is the art and science of combining different reagents to create a new compound that, when imbibed in some form, can produce a new, and hopefully beneficial, effect.
All tincatures, tonics, poisons, draughts, elixirs, and explosives require 4 things: Alchemical Equipment, 2 Reagents (An Oil and a Powder), and a Catalyst.
Alchemical Equipment
Alchemical Equipment is the specialized equipment that Alchemists use to distill reagents into their usable forms and create the final concoction.
Alchemical Equipment is not consumed in the process of creating alchemical concoctions.
Reagents
Before attempting the creation of any alchemical tinctures, tonics, poisons, draughts, elixirs, or explosives, the alchemist must first gather reagents. This can be done in many different ways:
- Buy reagents from a mercantile or market.
- Common reagents can be obtained easily, but can get expensive very quickly.
- Gather flora from the overworld and underworld.
- A great way to get new reagents to discover their properties, but until the alchemist knows where they grow, can be daunting.
- Hunt and harvest various beasts and creatures.
- Many unique reagents come from the body parts and organs of specific creatures, but often those creatures can be extremely dangerous.
Once reagents have been obtained, they need to be distilled down into either an Oil or Powder using Alchemical Equipment:
- 1 Hour to distill a reagent.
Every reagent can be made into either an Oil or Powder:
- Oils provide an adjective to describe the new compound.
- Powders provide a noun to describe the new compound.
Regardless if a the check to create a concoction is a success or failure, reagents are always used up.
Catalyst
Catalysts determine the tone and potency of the final compound. They are rare and collectable artifacts that modify compound. There are three levels of potency:
- Weak: Effect only lasts a few rounds.
- Medium: Effect lasts a few turns up to a few hours.
- Strong: Effect lasts hours or possibly days.
The tone of a compound refers to its superficial effects, or how the properties of the concoction manifest themselves.
Catalysts are not consumed in the process of creating an alchemical concoction.
Crafting the Alchemical Compound
Once the Alchemist has the reagents, a catalyst, and their alchemical equipment, they can create the new concoction:
- [WIT], consuming reagents regardless of failure or success.
- The difference between the d20 and the DR determines the strength of the compound.
