279 - After Sun’s Rise (Post Aristocracy)
18th of Olspring
Nar Shaddah Prairies of the Kaletarian Empire
Fort Gorham/Elzwarth
Drifters have taken a job to investigate a recent meteorite impact 2 hexes to the southwest. Impact was 2 weeks ago. Since then, local farmers and livestock have been found slaughters, while some villagers have gone missing. The impact site was near an old pre-Aristocracy aethrys reactor, that was taken over by the Vampyres during their reign.
The drifters learned of the following rumors regarding their recent job:
- “There’s old tek under the soi, that reactor glowed with life. The Aristocracy called it “The Mother Furnace”.”
- “If you eat the flesh of the mutants, it makes you strong.”
- “The High Gene-Seer wasn’t mad, he was close to something divine. His research were sermons with spores.”
- “There is a vault beneath the reactor. If you find the singing door, do not open it. The thing behind it has not forgotten its name.”
8:00 AM
Before leaving Elzwarth, the party stopped by the local mercantile for supplies. Doloris and Armagh caused a distraction, allowing Radickal to pilfer some torches and Lyra to snag a blank book. Though they were escorted out, no one was caught by the guard on duty.
8:20 AM
The party officially leaves Elzwarth, heading Southwest. Lyra guides the way while Armagh, Lyra, and Radickal keep lookout. Radickal rides his dryath. Lyra has her dryath hauling a cart.
9:20 AM
The party has traversed over the rolling hills, valleys, and tall prairie grass of Kaletaria. Lyra spends more time looking for rocks and petting her dryath than watching where they are going. In the distance Armagh sees 4 large bipedal creatures. The party ducks low in the tall grass and keeps quiet, waiting for the creatures to pass. As they get nearer, they see that they are a group of trolls on the hunt for food. Luckily, they did not notice. Lyra double checks her surroundings and feels confident that they are headed in the right direction. They continue onward.
10:20 AM
The party arrives at the reactor. It looks to be a two story building with a collapsed smokestack to one side. The party arrives from the Northeast, but the crater has formed to the south of the building.
10:30 AM
The party makes their way to the edge of the crater, from there they can see the double doors to the entrance of the reactor. The crater itself looks to be about 120’ wide and 60’ deep with some sort of wreckage in its center. About halfway down, on the side closest to the reactor, there also seems to be some sort of metal wreckage.
10:40 AM
Armagh and Radickal search through the wreckage in the center of the crater, determining it to be some sort of Aristocracy satellite that lost orbit. Everything seems to have been junked or burnt up either in atmosphere or upon its crash landing. Lyra finds odd footprints leaving and returning from the other wreckage. Two clawed feet, with a single clawed heel. The wreckage seems to have been buried as well, if it's actually wreckage at all. Pulling some metal back, she feels a cool breeze coming from within its darkness. Doloris explores around the outside of the reactor. She discovered that someone piled up some wood and boxes, allowing access to a ventilation shaft whose grate has been removed.
10:50 AM
Armagh joins Lyra. Tying a rope around himself, he delves into the void, a 4’ x 4’ metal shaft. 30’ he comes to a metal grate overlooking a 30’ x 30’ room. The room has slow pulsing amber light coming from immaculate sconces on the walls and candelabras on the ceilings. The walls are panelled in what appears to be dark mahogany. The floor is black marbled veined with white. Tables throughout the room are covered in various medical tools, with one large marble slab in the middle of the room. A large portrait hangs directly across from the shaft, with a hallway leading further in beneath it. Armagh, playing a joke, unties his rope, then tugs on it, causing Lyra to pull frantically only to come up with nothing on the other end. He then spooks her by jumping out.
Meanwhile, Radickal joins Deloris at the reactor. They climb the boxes to investigate the ventilation shaft, a 4’ x 4’ metallic shaft with cool air emanating from it. Deloris lights two torches and peers in. 20’ down she is greeted by a set of 8 shining eyes, a giant crab spider. She tosses one of the torches at the creature, striking it and causing it to rush down the vent towards her. She fends off the attack while Radickal pelts it with arrows from above. Another spider scuttles down the vent and attacks Doloris, getting bottlenecked at the opening. The pair battle with the arachnids.
11:00 AM
Armagh and Lyra study the footprints closer and follow them up the crater towards where the party originally came from. They notice that, as the edge of the crater becomes more vertical, strange slash marks can be seen dug into the dirt aligned with the footprints. By this time they hear Radickal and Doloris yelling to one another during their battle with spiders and come to join. They fire arrows up at the spiders as they emerge from the ventilation shaft.
Finally the two arachnids are destroyed. Radickal slays one with a well placed arrow to one of the eyes, while the other is crushed beneath Doloris’ fists. Doloris rips off enough spider legs to cook up a meal for the party later. Radickal dips three of his arrows in the spider’s poison. Lyra cuts off a spider’s fang to turn into a poisoned dagger later.
11:10 AM
The party decides to head back down to the shaft that Armagh investigated earlier. They enter inside and find that the grate to the room nearly falls off itself. They lower down to the floor. Radickal begins checking the floor for traps, while Lyra waves her staff in the air and touches the ceiling for traps. Luckily none are found.
11:20 AM
Radickal moves to the next section of the room, looking for traps. Doloris investigates the marble slab in the middle of the table. It has a drain in the middle, with various gullies and shoots leading to it. Rusted robotic arms holding rusted scalpels sit nearby. An off putting bronze device looking like the roots of a tree sits next to it. It holds various vials, all of which are long since empty and dry. Lyra looks at the tables, finding medical tools in various states of decay. She takes 2 bronze syringes, a bone saw, and two scalpels. Armagh scouts ahead, following the hallway till it comes to a closed door 30’ down and to the left. All come together to notice the 2.5’ x 3’ portrait hanging above the hallway. It is of an imposing figure clad in crimson red robes. The figure is ivory pale, bald, with tapered ears, and a piercing gaze that seems to reach out from the painting.
At this time the party decides to leave the room from the way they came and make camp up by the reactor. They will continue their investigation tomorrow.
